The Love Story of Banaras: Prem and Radha

Friends, you must have heard about Banaras…
But Banaras is not just a city — it is an emotion. The ancient city of Banaras breathes love, faith, and sacrifice. Love flows through its river, and every narrow lane hides a story of longing, devotion, and pain.

This is one such story — a story that turned love into immortality.

Prem’s World

In the ancient lanes of Banaras lived a sixteen-year-old boy named Prem. Prem belonged to a lower caste, a harsh reality shaped by India’s caste system and social divisions. His father worked at the ghats, performing the last rites of the dead, a duty deeply connected to Hindu cremation rituals at river ghats. Prem was their only son.

Prem was restless by nature. He never stayed at home for long. His mother ran after him just like Yashoda ran after little Krishna — but Prem was unstoppable. He was the Krishna of his lane, playful, fearless, and loved by everyone, even though society never truly accepted him.

Radha’s World

In the same lane lived a girl named Radha. Radha was a Brahmin, the daughter of a respected senior priest. People bowed their heads in front of her father. Prem’s mother worked in Radha’s house, washing utensils, and sometimes Prem went along with her.

Yet, despite living so close, Prem and Radha never spoke. Prem would quietly return after helping his mother, never daring to look directly into Radha’s world.

First Meeting – At School

Fate brought them together at school.

Radha studied in an expensive school — so expensive that its annual fee was more than Prem’s family earned in a year. Prem’s mother dreamed of a better future for her son. She pleaded with Radha’s father to help.

Using his influence, the priest got Prem admitted to the same school, with his fees waived.

They were classmates.
Still, they remained strangers.

Prem always sat on the last bench.
Radha always sat in the front.

Two different worlds… one classroom.

When a Drama Became Destiny

Months passed. One day, the school announced a cultural function with a stage drama.

The teacher asked,
“Who wants to participate?”

Prem raised his hand first. Acting was his passion. Other students followed. Some girls volunteered — but Radha didn’t.

Her friends tried to convince her, but she refused. She believed drama was a waste of time.

Rehearsals began the next day.

Prem’s acting impressed everyone. The teacher selected him for the lead role — Krishna.

Another girl was chosen for Radha’s role. During rehearsals, Prem and that girl became friends. She often spoke about Radha, but Prem paid little attention.

Then fate struck again.

That girl fell sick, and only ten days were left before the performance.

The teacher requested Radha to replace her friend. Reluctantly, Radha agreed.

And that is where the story truly began.

From Friendship to Love

Now Prem and Radha rehearsed together every day.

They talked.
They laughed.
They discovered that Prem had visited Radha’s house many times with his mother.

Slowly, friendship deepened.

Prem stopped sitting at the back. He began sitting beside Radha.

The play was a huge success. Their performance was praised, trophies were won, and their bond grew stronger.

Prem started visiting Radha’s house regularly. They studied together, ate together, laughed together.

Days turned into months.
Months turned into years.

Five Years Later…

They were now in college.

Radha had grown even more beautiful. Boys followed her everywhere — something Prem hated. Jealousy often led to fights. Radha knew Prem loved her, yet she teased him by giving attention to others, waiting for him to finally speak.

One evening, Prem stopped his scooter midway.

Radha asked,
“Why did you stop?”

With trembling hands, Prem said,
“Radha… I need to tell you something.”

“I loved you from the very first rehearsal. I can’t stand seeing anyone else near you. I don’t want you with anyone else.”

Radha smiled.

“Why?”

“Because I love you. I have loved only you since childhood. You are mine. I love you, Radha.”

Radha laughed and hugged him tightly.

“Idiot! I was waiting for this. I loved you too — I was just waiting for you to say it.”

That moment changed everything.

When Society Found Out

They were seen together everywhere — holding hands, riding the scooter, living their happiness openly.

Soon, the village started talking.

When Radha’s father found out, rage consumed him. How could his Brahmin daughter love a lower-caste boy?

He beat Radha brutally and locked her inside the house.

At the same time, he sent goons to Prem’s home. They destroyed everything and brutally assaulted Prem’s father.

The Fake Letter and Prem’s Death

One night, Radha’s friend gave Prem a letter.

It said Radha wanted to run away and marry him. She asked him to meet her at midnight near the Kali temple.

Prem believed every word.

At midnight, he waited, calling her name.

But instead of Radha, the goons appeared.

It was all a trap.

They confessed that Radha’s father planned everything.

They beat Prem mercilessly, broke his limbs, and stabbed him. Even while dying, Prem whispered only one name — Radha.

Radha’s Final Decision

At dawn, Prem’s mother cried outside Radha’s house, holding her son’s lifeless body.

Radha saw everything from the terrace.

Her heart shattered.

She tried to run to him, but her father locked her inside a room.

Alone… broken… guilt-stricken…

Radha decided life without Prem was meaningless.

She ended her life.

Immortal Love

The village turned against Radha’s father. Police arrested him.

The villagers decided that Prem and Radha would be cremated together.

Their funeral pyres burned side by side.

The society that separated them in life could not separate them in death.

Moral of the Story

When humans choose caste, religion, and pride over humanity, love dies first.

God created humans — humans created divisions.

This story reminds us that respecting love is the truest form of religion, a truth also reflected in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Those whom society separated, became eternal together — Prem and Radha, forever united.
